Insulin impairs the anticonvulsive activity of carbamazepine against maximal electroshock-induced seizures in mice.
In view of the data indicating that insulin can modify penetration of some drugs across cell membranes and tissue barriers, particularly the blood-brain barrier, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of insulin on both the anticonvulsant activity and the brain concentration of carbamazepine in mice suffering from seizures induced by maximal electroshock. The antiepileptic drug...
متن کاملToxic and drug-induced myopathies.
Drugs used for therapeutic interventions either alone or in combination may sometimes cause unexpected toxicity to the muscles, resulting in a varying degree of symptomatology, from mild discomfort and inconvenience to permanent damage and disability. The clinician should suspect a toxic myopathy when a patient without a pre-existing muscle disease develops myalgia, fatigue, weakness or myoglob...
متن کاملCarbamazepine-induced hypogammaglobulinemia
Carbamazepine is used to control seizures. Its common side effects are sleep disorders, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, polydipsia, irritability, ataxia, and diplopia. Involvement of the immune system is rare, and few cases of decreased immunoglobulin levels have been reported. We describe a patient with low immunoglobulin levels due to carbamazepine use who presented with recurrent urinary tract i...
متن کاملCarbamazepine- induced hypertension.
A 33-year-old man with complex partial seizures developed de novo hypertension after the initiation of carbamazepine, which resolved on discontinuation. Although rare, a variety of cardiovascular effects including hypertension have been reported with carbamazepine. Numerous mechanisms may be responsible; however, shared pharmacologic properties with the tricyclic antidepressants are suspect. Hy...
متن کاملCarbamazepine (Tegretol)-induced thrombocytopenia.
A case of carbamazepine-induced thrombocytopenia is reported. The patient, a 38-year-old female, developed thrombocytopenia 10 days after receiving 400 mg carbamazepine daily. The presence of an anti-IgG carbamazepine-dependent platelet-reactive antibody was documented. Using flow cytometry, the drug-induced antibody was detected at a drug concentration as low as 10(-6) M.

syndrome: Recurrent "Cold" staphylococ-cal abscesses. Pseudolymphoma syndrome, as a hypersensitive reaction to anticonvulsant drugs especially phenytoin, carbamaze-pine, tridone and phenobarbitone is well known(l-4). Its pathogenesis is uncertain. It consists of a triad of fever, generalized rash and lymphadenopathy. Varying degrees of VOLUME 34-SEFTEMBER 1997 7. Hill HR, Quie PG. Raised IgE le...
